Some 1.6 million people of Japanese origin now live in Brazil. In 1962, Korea and Brazil reached an agreement to ease unemployment in South Korea and to develop farmlands in Brazil. Tens of thousands of middle-class Koreans from South Korea and North Korea with little Portuguese language ability sailed for Brazil.
