Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and are known as Human Relations theories. Maslow (1943; 1961) argued that people are first motivated by lower level needs such as the physiological (food, water, and sex) and security (physical safety, security, provision for old age, etc.) and then by higher level needs such as love (the need to belong, the need to give and receive love, the need to be accepted by associates), self-esteem (also known as self-respect—the need for achievement, recognition, importance and confidence in the world, the desire for reputation or prestige), and self-actualization (the need to be creative, to fulfill one’s potential, to become what one is meant or fitted to be)
