One major innovation in animal body plan was the development of the coelom. Describe the role of the coelom

The coelom is a body cavity that is at least partially lined with mesoderm. This space serves as a compartment to house the reproductive and digestive organs. Because of this compartmentalization, coelomate animals have reproductive and digestive organs that have evolved more complex structures and functionality than those found in acoelomates. The coelomic cavity also provides protection for internal organs and serves as a specialized space where digestion can occur in relative isolation from the rest of the organs of the animal.
