The dialysis catheter is inserted into T.A.'s left subclavian vein. You are preparing to
administer the IV antibiotic and find that his only other IV access, a peripheral line, is the
site of the dopamine infusion. What are your options?
What will be an ideal response?
Because you cannot administer the antibiotic with the dopamine, you could contact the physician
regarding placing a central line or insert another peripheral IV. The dialysis catheter is dedicated to
dialysis access and should not be used for scheduled IV medications. Administration of medications
through the catheter is usually restricted to those medications given during hemodialysis.
