Define cognitive dissonance. Describe the conditions under which people are more likely to try to reduce it, and ways that people do this. Give an example of a time when you felt cognitive dissonance in your own life, and describe how you dealt with it.

Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort a person feels when his or her attitude and behavior are incompatible.
People are most driven to reduce cognitive dissonance when a lot is at stake (the attitude or behavior is important, or if there are high emotional or financial investments) or if the person has control over the situation. To reduce cognitive dissonance, a person can change his or her attitude and/or behavior; belittle the importance of inconsistent behavior; or find consonant elements that outweigh the dissonant ones (rationalize).
The student should then give an example of cognitive dissonance from his or her life and link the example to one of the three ways to reduce cognitive dissonance.
