Please explain the traditional process of lawyer discipline and the different kinds of sanctions that are issued against lawyers.

What will be an ideal response?

Lawyer discipline begins with a complaint being made against an attorney with the
disciplinary commission for the jurisdiction where the attorney practices. An informal
investigation takes place, which might result in the complaint being dismissed out of hand. If
not, the attorney is notified of the charges and given the opportunity to respond in writing to
the charges. At this point, the commission might dismiss the charges. If the charges have
merit, a hearing will be held with the disciplinary commission, or with a specially appointed
hearing master, such as a retired judge. If the fact finder rules against the attorney, a sanction
will be recommended. Sanctions can range from a reprimand, to varying lengths of
suspension, to disbarment. Ultimately, no sanction is issued until the highest appellate court
in that jurisdiction approves of the sanction, or hears the appeal from the lawyer.
