Question: A friend asks if he should set alpha at .05 or .01. Which do you recommend and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: .05 is the default choice. It is most commonly used. However, if my friend wants to decrease the chance of committing a Type I, he might consider setting alpha as .01. The downside to this is that he will need a larger sample size and it will be more difficult to reject the null hypothesis. I recommend sticking with .05.
