• According to a Pew Research Center study, the contentious 2016 Republican presidential primary and general election helped increase cable prime-time viewership and brought some increase to network TV newscast viewerships, but a rising number of people, particularly younger individuals, are getting more of their news and information from social media
• Among the problems that analysts believe have been brought about by convergence are: (1) the decline of ethics in journalism, (2) constant pressure for all journalistic endeavors to be immediately profitable and not merely a public service, (3) a significant decrease in the quantity and quality of news available to audiences, (4) the quashing of public debate about the power of the media industries and how they deal with important social issues, and (5) a dramatic increase in the influence of powerful Washington lobbyists who represent the interests of the media conglomerates. Because the reach of the media industries is worldwide, these concerns are not limited to the United States.
