Ms. Leverett is using a cognitive apprenticeship model with her debate students to help them develop persuasive arguments. She models the process of developing an argument and coaches students as they practice a simple example. She pairs students to explain their thinking to each other, receive feedback, and reflect on their learning. She circulates and provides additional feedback. Then she assigns the complex topics for debate. At this point, students apply what they are learning about persuasive argument to develop their positions for the actual debates.
