Using Gerald Patterson’s research with mothers and difficult to manage boys, briefly explain the Social Cognitive Learning approach to understanding parenting.

What will be an ideal response?

The Social Cognitive Learning approach interprets child behaviors – and misbehaviors – through the lens of social learning. Patterson’s research revealed that the mothers were inadvertently reinforcing coercive behaviors when they “gave up” at attempts to discipline their sons. The boys learned that by escalating their coercive behavior, they would “win” the battle.
