Describe warranting theory and give an example of a situation in which it may apply.
What will be an ideal response?
Warranting theory suggests that when we communicate anonymously online, we may misrepresent information about ourselves; however, we are less likely to distort our representation of ourselves when the receiver has access to other members of our social circle. Student examples will vary, but one example would be two people who are communication online through a dating site and find they have acquaintances or friends in common. They would be less likely to lie or distort information about themselves, knowing this information could be confirmed or refuted by the mutual contact.
