The PK–3 movement represents an effort by educators and child development specialists to coordinate the learning experience of young children from pre-kindergarten through the third grade. Since research has proven the importance of quality early childhood education programs for success later in life, and the early childhood years stretch from infancy through age eight, professionals have begun to stress the importance of continuity and alignment during this period to bolster social, emotional, and cognitive development. Unlike the traditional education experience in which there is often no coordination between pre-K and K–3 settings, supporters of the PK–3 movement push for cooperation and purposeful communication between teachers at both levels so that pre-K educators can better prepare their students for the elementary school experience while elementary teachers can develop a greater focus on the whole child.
