What is the catalyst efficiency monitor, and how and why is it performed?

What will be an ideal response?

The OBD II systems perform a catalyst efficiency monitor to verify the catalyst's ability and efficiency to convert HC and CO into H2O and CO2. The critical sensors that are part of the system are the pre-catalyst oxygen sensor, which is located upstream of the catalyst, and a post-catalyst oxygen sensor, which is located downstream of the catalyst. If the catalyst is functioning efficiently, the post-catalyst oxygen sensor will have a low switching frequency indicating that the catalyst is either storing oxygen or converting CO and HC emissions.
