Geert Hofstede worked for IBM in the 1960s to help them identify cultural differences across the 70 countries in which they operated at the time. He developed a model of national culture based on five dimensions, each measured on a scale of 0–100. Each nation was given a score on each of the five dimensions. The value of Hofstede’s model is that it allows us to estimate the degree of difference between two countries on each of the five dimensions. The greater the difference, the more difficult it will be to bring employees from one culture into another.
