Define bottom-up manufacturing.
What will be an ideal response?
Bottom-up manufacturing (BUM) is an alternative to traditional topdown manufacturing. With BUM, sophisticated tools are used to coax atoms into place to produce a product. Rather than subtracting material, we are adding material, atom by atom. Individual atoms are moved into place to create new and diff erent objects. This is truly building things from the bottom up. Bottom-up methods are new and need refi nement to become commercially successful, but they are the future in nanoscale manufacturing.
