Prior restraint is a judicial order that stops a media organization from publishing or broadcasting a story or image. It is the most extreme and least accepted form of censorship in the United States. The major cases involving prior restraint include Near v. Minnesota, the Pentagon Papers case, and the Progressive case. Prior restraint of information is very difficult to enforce now because there are so many media outlets and people can publish information themselves directly on the Internet.
