Rosa Wilkins gives 30-minute therapeutic massages at a local gym. All of her Monday and Friday appointments are taken and she has a waiting list for those who would like to move their regular massage to the first or the last day in the week. At the end of those days Wilkins is exhausted. Demand on Tuesdays and Thursdays is at an acceptable level, but no one seems to want a massage on Wednesday. Wilkins wishes she could convince some of her Monday and Friday customers to come on Wednesday. Can you give her some ideas to help shift the demand for her service?

What will be an ideal response?

Students can answer this question in several different ways. Answers should deal both with reducing demand on Mondays and Fridays and increasing demand on Wednesdays. Possible suggestions for increasing demand: (1) offer coupons for a reduced price on Wednesdays. (2) Go to her clients' homes or offices and give massages there. (3) Offer discounts to regular customers who come on Wednesdays. (4) Close on Wednesday or open for only half a day. (5) Add aromatherapy or soothing music to Wednesdays' massages.
Possible suggestions for decreasing demand on Mondays and Fridays: (1) Use signs and mailings to communicate that she can give better massages when she's not worn out or that customers might enjoy massages on Wednesdays more. (2) Give no discounts at all on Mondays and Fridays. (3) Take care of her regular customers and take no new customers on those two days. (4) Offer price incentives to customers who move their regular appointments from Mondays and Fridays to Wednesdays.
