Gwen is going to have to have skin grafts on both her arms and part of her chest and face. Discuss the use of skin grafts

a. What are different types of skin grafts for burn victims?
b. What other treatment goes along with the grafts?

Students' answers should include the following:
a. Types of grafts include the following:
• Xenograft or heterograft is from animals, usually pigs or cows.
• Allograft or homograft is skin similar to the client.
• Autograft is the client's own skin from another area of his or her body. Using client's own skin causes additional pain; new donor site has potential for infection and scarring, with delay in wound healing.
b. Pressure garments are used once grafts are healed.
Sunscreen and Mederma for prevention of further scarring are used.
Limited movement may be due depending on the extent of the burns; even tough grafts are used.
