How should a speech and language pathologist (SLP) assess bilingual or multilingual students?
What will be an ideal response?
It is important that the SLP not merely test a bilingual or multilingual student by translating test items into the child's primary language. The SLP should determine which language the child needs to be tested in, then use appropriate diagnostic tools to determine whether there is simply a language difference of if there is a disability by comparing results to other students who share the language of the child being evaluated. Fair, unbiased assessment is difficult for bilingual and bidialectal students, so every precaution must be used to ensure that the testing is enables the SLP to learn about such students' strengths and preferences by using alternative rather than standardized measures. Once a disorder is determined, the SLP can use culturally sensitive measures to plan appropriate therapies.
