Describe what other students in the class should be doing while a teacher is working with small groups.

What will be an ideal response?

While a teacher is working with small groups, other students in the classroom should be engaged in meaningful literacy activities. Most often, this means reading and responding to text. Longer-term projects that span across more than one day are more effective, especially with older readers. When choosing activities for students to do independently, the teacher should consider the students’ needs and if the activity is more valuable than reading text. Phonics games, and other skill-based activities can be motivating, but should not be the focus of independent work.
