Professionals who work with children from diverse backgrounds must distinguish between ethnicity and educational exceptionality. Student responses may vary, but the ultimate idea that must be expressed is the fact that a child's ethnicity should not make them an exception. Differences do not equate to deficits or dysfunction. Children from all walks of life learn in different ways, and the behaviors and characteristics that one culture views as atypical may be seen as "normal" by another. Oftentimes, ethnicity is mistaken for exceptionality when teachers view their own cultural group as superior and fail to realize that all behaviors and learning is viewed through "culturally tinted lenses." This type of thinking is known as ethnocentric behavior: the tendency for individuals to view their own cultural group as superior and consider the ways of other cultural groups to be odd or inferior.
