Choose at least two of the common tensions in the dialectic theory of relationships and illustrate how they have played a role in one of your own relationships.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Students should demonstrate understanding of at least two of the five common tensions: autonomy/connection, openness/protection, novelty/predictability, judgment/acceptance, and affection/instrumentality. Someone who chooses autonomy/connection might express how relationships are difficult because they want to make a connection with someone else, but they also enjoy having their alone time to recharge. Perhaps this manifested in a relationship where they would sometimes tell their partner that they needed some “me” time. A person who chooses novelty/predictability should express a simultaneous appreciation for and frustration with routine. Perhaps they made sure to spend weekends having spontaneous fun rather than engaging in routine activities.
