Where will you go to source the necessary information to assist you with this case?

You have been assigned to be the instrument nurse for a patient, Mr East, who is to have a right inguinal hernia. The set-up has been done and your preceptor says you have an hour to prepare for this case. You are not sure what is involved in an inguinal hernia repair.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
Read up about what the operation entails, look at the preference card for information of personal preferences, speak to an experienced nurse/preceptor about what you will need and then afterwards reflect with your preceptor about what you did well and areas for improvement. The sutures required for the different layers of surgery could be written on the theatre whiteboard for quick reference. Ensure that you are positioned so that you can see the operation and follow the sequence, making it easier to anticipate the next instrument needed. Anticipate what instrument may be required next and have it ready in your hand (if another instrument is required instead, just quickly swap them over).
