Describe the most common spread footing.
What will be an ideal response?
?The most common shallow foundation type is the continuous spread footing, or strip footing. A strip footing provides a stable and continuous foundation around the full perimeter of a structure. The soil below the footing must be undisturbed or compacted to provide a solid substrate. Compaction is achieved using heavy rollers or vibratory tamping that reduces the volume of air voids between individual soil particles. If soil conditions allow for trenching without the need for stabilization, the excavated trench can act as the formwork for the footing concrete. In loose soils and unconfined sands, wood or steel formwork is constructed to contain the wet concrete during the concrete placement. When used on sloping sites, the footings are stair-stepped with the slope to accommodate the change in grade.
