The dilemma is that either ignoring or recognizing students' linguistic or cultural differences can perpetuate them and maintain inequality of social power and opportunity among ethnic or other subcultural groups. If differences are ignored, students will probably be given instruction that is not suited to their cultural styles or needs. If differences are recognized, instruction geared toward students' cultural styles may teach only skills valued by their own subcultures to the detriment of preparing them to succeedwithin the larger context of American culture. Recommendations for practice may include descriptions of teaching tolerance and appreciation of diversity, improving instruction for language-minority students, and adopting effective teaching practices.
