The two types of groups that can influence your audience are social traits by choice and those by birth.
Social traits by choice are people your audience members choose to connect with, such as political parties; hobby communities; athletic teams; and professional, social or civic organizations. For example, school enrichment assistants might react negatively to a speech arguing for online academic tutoring to reduce payroll costs unless they see how their roles might contribute to it.

Social traits by birth includes those relationships your audience members have with others by birth and by growing up within certain societies—specifically race, ethnicity, and culture. An example, U.S. "minorities" tend to consider issues such as immigration laws more carefully than people in the "majority."
