Describe several methods that can be used to estimate the difficulty level of reading materials

Readability formulas are quantitative methods that estimate the reading demands of a text. Most use measures of word and sentence length to make those estimates. In general, a text containing short words and short sentences will be easier to understand than a text with longer words and longer sentences. A third factor used in some readability formulas is word familiarity, based on the assumption that a passage containing more high-frequency words will be easier to understand than one containing more rare words. Readability formulas examine samples from a text and determine the word length, sentence length, and number of high-frequency words to arrive at an estimate of the difficulty of a passage. Recent work in this area includes the Lexile and ATOS systems. Text complexity issues are addressed in the Common Core State Standards.
