If a lymphocyte fails to differentiate between self and non-self, it may initiate an immune response against its own tissue. For example, in rheumatoid arthritis, an immune response is directed against joint tissue, while in Graves' disease, autoantibodies attach to TSH receptors in the thyroid causing overproduction of thyroid hormone.
