Here are five examples of soil amendments and their uses:1
) Wet peat moss stays saturated and is not easily aerated, but if allowed to dry, it becomes somewhat
hydrophobic. The addition of other amendments with peat allows for water penetration and better
aeration.
2 Perlite is a heat-treated product made from volcanic lava. It appears to be small, white pebbles and is
able to provide aeration as well as water-holding properties to media.
3) Vermiculite is the product of heat-treated mica from natural deposits. It is available in different
sizes and has the appearance of miniature accordions that absorb water and add good aeration to soils.
4) Sand adds good drainage properties to soil mixes; this is its chief attribute because it does not hold
nutrients.
5) Sphagnum moss is a dried, bog plant and is sold in two forms: milled and unmilled. The unmilled
form is coarse with plenty of pore space. Some plants are directly grown and sold in sphagnum moss
such as orchids. Sphagnum moss contains a natural anti-fungal substance.
