Varies. As industrialization continued, bureaucracy became the dominant form of organization in the economy and throughout society. Bureaucracies are large formal organizations governed by rules and regulations. They reward workers for competence, performance, and rule following. The stress on rationality and objectivity can counteract the more blatant forms of racism and increase the array of opportunities available to members of minority groups as bureaucracies are based on the ability to perform tasks. Today, virtually the entire scientific community rejects the idea that race is an important determinant of intelligence or competence. These findings contributed to the destruction of the formal systems of privilege based solely on race and traditional prejudice, which is based on the assumption that race is a crucial personality characteristic.
