What are the most important questions to ask the owner/client of an animal with vomiting and diarrhea?
What will be an ideal response?
The following information is important to gather when taking a history of an animal with vomiting and diarrhea:
Duration of signs (may help determine how severe the condition is and what may have triggered the condition)
Relationship of signs to eating (may help localize the affected part of the digestive system, for example, upper GI versus lower GI)
Is the animal eating or drinking? (may help indicate a trigger for these conditions to start)
How frequently is vomiting/diarrhea occurring? (may help indicate severity of the condition and degree of dehydration)
What does it look like? (may help determine the cause, location, or possible complications if the vomit or diarrhea has blood or mucus in it)
Is there anything in it? (may help determine the cause of the condition)
Are other animals in the household affected? (may help determine if the condition is infectious in nature)
Any new products used in the household? (may help determine if there is a toxic cause to these signs)
Is the animal allowed to roam unsupervised? (may help determine what the animal has access to and if this could be a cause of the condition)
How old is the animal? (young animals are more prone to certain types of infections, such as parvovirus in puppies, or ingestion of objects; older animals may have vomiting and diarrhea secondary to systemic disease)
Has this happened before? (may indicate a systemic condition, such as pancreatitis)
Where has the animal been (travel history)? (may expand the potential origin of the disease to include other infectious agents)

Bowel and bladder control involve spinal reflex arcs that are located in the sacral region of the spinal cord. In both instances two sphincter muscles, an internal sphincter of smooth muscle and an external sphincter of skeletal muscle, control the passageway out of the body. How would a transection of the spinal cord at the L1 level affect an individual's bowel and urinary bladder control?
