Explain the purpose of structural drawings.

What will be an ideal response?

The structural drawings represent the structural elements, such as foundations and structural frame. These normally are prepared by a structural engineer, either in-house with the architectural firm or on a consulting basis. The structural design is coordinated with the architectural aspects of the building.

Structural drawings usually have definitive dimensions for the foundations and structural elements, both horizontally and vertically. These and the architectural drawings should be continuously coordinated, however, as both may contain information necessary for the location and construction of the building elements. The structural drawing is the primary document used in establishing the building's structural system and thus the basic dimensional attributes of the building.
