Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) promotes water retention and reduces urine output. ADH inserts aquaporins into the apical membranes of cells in the late distal tubules and cortical collecting ducts to permit rapid water reabsorption. In the absence of ADH, as is the case when alcohol is present, the late distal tubule and cortical collecting duct are barely permeable to water. A larger volume of water is lost in the urine.
