Discuss the advantages and disadvantages to offenders and the community in keeping inmates in supermax prisons for serious or heinous crimes they have committed. Should these inmates be kept in solitary confinement without human contact for many years? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

Advantages—such serious and heinous crimes cannot be committed by the individual as long as they are in a supermax prison, including violence against other inmates. Disadvantages—long-term isolation creates anxiety, depression, anger, cognitive disturbances, and so on, and there is concern for the human rights of prisoners associated with solitary confinement.
