The impact this had on current thinking is that it refocused our attention on the person first rather than on the disability. This renaming changed the word "children" to "individuals" and the term "handicapped" to "with disabilities." This renaming helps us see people first and any disability they have as secondary. It also suggest that the disability is only one aspect of his or her personhood.
