Identify two reasons why recess is important in schools, and explain why recess has been cut back and even eliminated in many schools
What will be an ideal response?
First, recess provides the opportunity for students to exercise and "blow off steam." And, lack of recess has been linked to childhood problems ranging from obesity to anxiety and hyperactivity Second, free play during recess also provides students with opportunities to interact with others that can contribute to cognitive, social, and emotional development. Time is the reason schools have cut back on recess. Many schools feel pressured to improve scores on high-stakes tests, so they allocate extra time to the areas—such as reading and math—that are covered on the tests, and the extra time often comes from recess.
