What aspects should the IEP team consider before determining which functional skill to teach, and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Without careful consideration of the person’s age, family values, or respecting the dignity of the individual, it is possible for functional skills to be taught incorrectly, or they are not considered “functional” for the child. For example, consider the case of the toddler who had the IEP goal to “use a fork.”Teachers spent week after week teaching the child how to use a fork because an assessment revealed that he did not have the skill. In his home environment, the child rarely used utensils, as the family ate mostly finger foods like tortillas and such.Since the school did not communicate well with the family, teachers did not know that the skill of using a fork was not necessarily functional for this child.
