A grade of zero distorts the final grade and diminishes its value as an indicator of what was learned; it could also undermine students' motivation; missing work and missed tests also may result from organizational problems related to a learner's disability or life circumstances beyond their control. As a teacher, you should make sure all students understand your grading policies for late or missed work; allow students to turn in late work for full or partial credit; increase the level of communication regarding assignments, tests, and due dates; have students complete projects in segments with separate scores for each segment; and consider setting an IEP goal for improving time management, including the self-monitoring of work completion.
