The advantages of using essay tests are that they reveal how well students can recall, organize, and clearly communicate information. They encourage students to learn material meaningfully. When they are well written, essay tests require examinees to function at the higher cognitive levels. However, essay tests are difficult to grade consistently and grading can be time consuming. They are also time consuming to respond to, which limits the amount of the instructional domain that can be tested.
