What would be considered a "heart-healthy" diet?

The primary goal of the recommendations set forth by the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health is to maintain a healthy body weight. Total fat should be limited to 20-35% of kcalories, and saturated fat to ?10% of total kcalories (people with heart disease should consume ?7%). Trans fat should be avoided, dietary omega-3 fatty acids should be increased (i.e., fish should be consumed twice weekly, and those with elevated triglycerides need to consume even more), and cholesterol should be limited to 300 mg/day (<200 mg for those with heart disease). Individuals should increase consumption of whole grains and other complex carbohydrates (?3 servings of whole grains and plentiful fruits and vegetables each day), limit sodium to 2,300 mg per day, consume at least 1,000 mg calcium per day, choose potassium-rich foods (legumes, potatoes, and fruits such as bananas), and select foods high in folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12
