Explain why a person will develop a simple goiter if he or she has an insufficient amount of salt in the diet.

What will be an ideal response?

Most salt used today contains iodine. Iodine is needed by the thyroid gland in order to produce T3 and T4. If iodine levels are too low, the individual cannot produce the necessary amount of T3 and T4. This will result in constant stimulation of the thyroid by TSH, which is released by the anterior pituitary gland. Constant stimulation of the thyroid causes it to enlarge resulting in a simple goiter.
