An irregular word is a word a student cannot read by applying the letter-sound correspondence that he or she has learned in the reading program because one or more letters in the word does not represent the sound that the student has learned for the letter. Aword considered irregular at an early point in a reading program may not be consideredirregular at a later point. Once students learn all letter-sound correspondences in a word in which each letter represents its most common sound, the word is no longer an irregular.
