Hofstede broke down societal characteristics and culture into a number of different
spectrum factors that could influence the ethical behavior of an individual. Some
societies value more individualistic action and conception, and some societies value
more collectivistic action. If a society is a low power distance culture, then an individual might be less inclined to accept a very wide gap in the standard of living between people. Some cultures are more masculine and some more feminine according to Hofstede, and some cultures have citizens that mainly value issues of the present and future instead of valuing strong links with the past. Individuals from an indulgent culture might tend to take a more egoist, self-satisfaction view to ethical decisions, while those in a self-restraint culture might value hard work and duty over personal fulfillment.
