How well do findings from research support the effectiveness of the direct instruction approach? What research questions still need to be considered?
What will be an ideal response?
It is clear that direct instruction methods can improve the teaching of certain basic skills, but it is equally clear that there is much yet to be learned about how and for what purposes they should be used. Direct instruction research has focused on basic reading and mathematics, mostly in the elementary grades. For other subjects and grade levels, we have less of a basis for believing that direct instruction methods will improve student learning.
