Prospective tenants should inquire about the history of crime on the premises, both to persons and to property. How long does it take for the police to arrive if called in an emergency? How long does it take for the fire department to arrive? Is there a security patrol, and if so, during what hours? The location of master keys and the date the locks were changed should be ascertained, possibly suggesting appropriate preventive action by the landlord. Deadbolt locks on the outside doors are a must. Adequate night lighting should be provided, especially in the vicinity of the tenant's parking spot. Sliding glass doors and windows should be in good mechanical condition and equipped with effective protective devices. Curtains should be lined, or privacy should be provided by drapes that
can be closed after dark. A visit to prospective units at midnight for a "comfort" test could be helpful.
