What is the purpose of a conclusion? What general guidelines can you offer for developing and delivering a successful conclusion?
What will be an ideal response?
- Purpose: Your conclusion should let listeners know you are about to finish the speech. It should also clearly remind them of your thesis and the main points you've covered.
- Guidelines:
* The conclusion should be brief and should end with a definite summarizing statement. The conclusion should account for between 5 and 15 percent of the content of the speech.
* The conclusion should contain no new information.
* The preparation of the conclusion should not be rushed. Allow plenty of time to develop it, and craft it carefully, but deliver it extemporaneously.
* Leave your audience with something memorable.
* Write out the conclusion word for word. Then learn it so well you can end your speech smoothly, conversationally, and confidently.
