Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: Teachers should be assessing student progress regularly using a variety of assessment mechanisms for the purpose of providing regular feedback to students and to inform teachers of how they need to adjust instruction to meet student learning needs. This type of assessment is referred to as formative assessment. Faculty use the information to help students identify their own strengths and challenges and to adjust instruction. These assessments are generally “low stakes” because the data, for the most part, does not contribute to the student’s grade. Examples of formative assessments include asking the students to develop a summary statement about their key learnings in a particular class or asking them to submit drafts of projects for feedback.
