How has following the inmate culture in a prison changed, and what are the potential reasons for the change?
What will be an ideal response?
• Today, many people believe that the inmate code is dead, or at least ignored by most inmates. The older inmates talk of "young punks," inmates who are always out to exploit others, don't respect the old-timers, constantly cause trouble that brings greater supervision from staff, and use muscle and not brains to get through their prison experience. Reasons include a growing number of inmates who more closely identify with outside society than prison culture, more young and impulsive inmates who only respect physical power, and the lessening isolation of prisons, which undermines the solidarity and formation of the inmate code.
