A critical moment is when you are being identified with or defined by a situation. If the situation makes you look competent, that's great. But if the dynamic puts you on a slippery slope, it could turn sour. It takes skill to recognize a shift in tides and to know when to proactively assert yourself to regain traction. Thus the admonishment to look for subtle clues during performance reviews.
