Define and briefly explain the "French Paradox."

The "French Paradox" is the idea that even though alcohol intake can be associated with heart disease, drinking modest amounts of red wine was reported to be protective against heart disease. The basis for the apparent paradox is that the French—who drink more red wine than do Americans—have lower rates of heart disease despite the fact that their saturated fat intake is similar to those of Americans. In fact, regardless of any protective effects moderate alcohol consumption might convey, the source of alcohol is unlikely to make much difference.
